13.11.08

  • the NME contents page is very recognisable as it is hugely similar to the front cover of the magazine.
  • the red, black and white are once again the prodominant colours but they have also added yellow onto the page. this breaks up the other colours as the yellow stands out dramatically. especially on a black background.
  • the contents page can also be recognised by the NME logo which is placed in the top left hand corner like it is on the front cover. the theme of the magazine is carried through from the front cover to the contents page.
  • the contents page is split up into two columns. one has the most writing in and then the other takes up 2/3 of the page and includes both pictures and the black box at the bottom with the yellow writing in.
  • you can see the columns quite easily as there is a white margin between both which shows the divide.
  • the right hand column has made the writing align to the left hand side
  • there are 9 boxes in total on the contents page which include some form of writing or a picture. the majority of these boxes surround the subtitles/headings of what is going to be in the magazine such as; news, radar, reviews, live and features.

10.11.08 + 12.11.08

  • the music genre for this is indie.
  • the target audience for NME magazine is people who interested in indie music, people who like to go to gigs and people who are interested in what the band members of particular bands have been upto.
  • the main image on the front of the magazine is of a man and a woman. the woman is lying on her back looking very open whilst the man has his left hand on her stomach with two of his fingers surrounding her tattoo. while his other arm is stretched out abover her head. the man is lying on his side with his eyes focused on the woman representing that he has feelings for her. whereas the woman is staring into the camera showing that she isn't so interested in the man.
  • this main image is related the the genre of the magazine as it contains the same style of clothing that indie people/performers would wear. also there is a tattoo in the picture which is popular among alot of people who are in the indie scene.
  • the main image is aligned to the right, therefore the text to left, top and bottom frame the image. also the womans hand looks like it's hanging onto the letter E in NME. this gives a good effect as it shows that she is hanging onto what's going to be in the magazine. it could also represent that what's inside the magazine is interesting and will make the readers hand onto every word.
  • the mise en scene of the front cover is very important when trying to attract the right kind of target audience. the clothes worn by the models are dark which go along with the genre of the magazine. the makeup worn by the female model consists of dark eyeshadow and eyeliner, this is the only major makeup she seems to be wearing. there are very few props which have been used when creating this front cover. the woman has a cigarette in her mouth which is just burning away whilst the man has no props. even with the lack of props, the image on the front cover is still corresponding with the genre of the magazine.
  • the mise en scene of the front cover brings to mind cultural codes such as indie with the leather jackets, dark makeup, jeans, hoods etc. from looking at the two models, you could easily tell what genre the magazine was as they are dressed stereotypically.
  • also the main image suggests that it is a manly magazine because there is a girl on the front and the man seems to be lying next to her and have his hand on her stomach and his other above her head. this suggests that he wants to be dominating or controlling to some extent.
  • red, white and black are the prodominant colours on the front cover. but there is also a dark gold colour which has been used for some of the writing and a background colour for another bit of writing.
  • the colours are simple and go together well and with the dark gold being added in, it gives it an extra edge and makes those bits stand out more.
  • the red writing which says "crystal castles" stands out alot as it is the same colour as the title of the magazine (NME) and the font size is also quite large which draws peoples attention to it.
  • the image relates to the target audience as some people who listen to indie music would dress the same or similar to the models. also they are wearing dark clothing which can contribute to the mood of the magazine.
  • the title of the magazine is NME. this stands for New Musical Express. it shows that this magazine if full of new music and bands. also indie is quite a new genre so the "new" in the title suggests it's not an old genre. and the "musical express" bit suggests that the bands/performers express themselves through music. this reflects the target audience as many people feel as though they can express themselves through or by music so it will attract more people to reading this magazine.
  • the typeface that has been used is very bold/capital letters. there is an exception to this rule where lowercase letters have been used. it makes the magazine seem very manly, and again the colour are seen to be manly aswell as the bold typeface that has been used.
  • because the typeface is bold, it makes the writing stand out and draw in peoples attention. as this magazine is aimed more at men, having bigger writing could attract them more as stereotypically, if things are bigger they are better.

7.11.08

  • the colours used on the double page spread are similiar to those on the front cover and the contents page. black is a very prodominant colour which is used throughout the magazine as it represents the "dark" side to rock music.
  • there are 7 images featured on the double page spread. there is one image, the main one which is the biggest and it shows the lead singer which the band is probably most well known for.
  • the image shows his arms covered in tattoos showing a rough/scruffy look. along with his outstretched arm, his veins are very prominent. this could be because he is about to clench his fist as he is getting very into the music.
  • the pages look like they have been split into three columns. two thin ones on either side and a large one in the middle which is wide enough to hold the main image.
  • the column on the left hand side is full of writing and only includes one small picture at the bottom which is of the lead singer of Avenged Sevenfold. he looks happy as he has received a good review of his gig.
  • the type of font used on the double page spread is that which has been used on both the front cover and the contents page.

6.11.08

Kerrang contents page.
  • the kerrang contents page is easily recogniseable as it is very similar to the front cover.
  • it has the same colours of red and black which are seen to be masculine colours and this again relates to the target audience of the magazine. they have also decided to use yellow on the contents page. this makes the writing stand out against the black box.
  • the theme of the magazine is carried through into the contents page as it has 11 images, one of which is the front cover of the magazine and the others are of the bands which are going to be featured in this particular issue of Kerrang.
  • it has been split up into 4 columns. these columns are clearly shown because they are thin black lines separating each column.
  • the right hand column shows the contents using mostly words. and the writing is aligned the the left where the separating line is.
  • the other three columns have 2 images in each column. underneath each image is a page number using the black and yellow colours to make it stand out and then has the band name written in capitals like the title of the magazine (KERRANG) and then a couple of words explaining what each story is going to be about.
  • the font used on the contents is the same as the ones used on the front cover. on the contents page where it says "kerrang! awards special!" it looks like part of the writing has been rubbed off with a sponge kind of thing. and on the front cover the red banner, the top of it looks like it has been ripped or like with the writing, part of it has been rubbed off as it creates the same effect. along with the red banner, on the front cover where it says, "8 page special!" and "wish you was here?" also have the same effect.
  • the 9 main images on the contents all have a thin black outline and then on the left and bottom side of the image they have a black/grey shadow. this makes the images seem like they are standing out of the page and give them a 3D effect.
  • the red in the contents page is not as prodominant as it is on the front cover. the yellow has taken over being the prodominant colour on the contents page.

5.11.08

  • The imaged is framed by the top strap line and then by the K! AWARDS banner.
  • The image represents the genre of music as there is a fierce and scruffy look going on with all the 5 men.
  • The target audience is for young males who like to go to gigs and festivals. Scruffy looking. --> You can tell this because the colours used (red, black and white) are stereotypically manly colours. Also all of the writing is in capitals suggesting a fierce approach like the front man in the picture.
  • This genre for this magazine is rock.
  • The main image is of 5 male adults, four of which you can see are holding the Kerrang music award. The front man looks scruffy and quite aggressive as he has a clenched fist. The man wearing the mask looks scary as you cannot see any of his face. The person behind him looks intimidating as he isn’t showing any facial expression. The person on the left at the back looks very cheeky as he has got a big smile on his face and has his thumb sticking up. And the person at the front on the left look quite rugged, and is holding the award close to him showing that it probably means a lot to him.
  • The image relates to the target audience as they dress the same way and look like they belong together on the magazine.
  • The magazine is called KERRANG and this reflects the noise that the guitars make when they are strummed. It represents the target audience as KERRANG is written in capital letters and therefore shows the music is going to be loud and intense.
  • The copy of the magazine will be placed in the music section in a shop that sells magazines. The size of the magazine is roughly A4 size. This is important as it can hold alot of information and is a good size to hold as they target audience are reading it.
  • The straplines use simple language. but they catch the readers attention as they have been typed in large, bold font. The bottom strapline where all the bands are named has a "+" sign separating the bands. this splits the bands names up without using another word such as "and". the "+" sign is in yellow which also splits the bands up even more as they are all white in colour.
  • the camera angel is face on and shows the top of the body on the front two men and then the other three men you can see from their shoulders upwards.
  • the colours used in the image are quite dark and none of them really stand out. this contributes to the genre of the magazine as rock is stereotypically seen to be a dark/evil type of music.
